Central Villages

From the mountain villages to coast villages and Rigo on the East Side to Mekeo on the West Side.

Central Villages

Central Province is the cultural heartland of Papua New Guinea’s southern coast, where coastlines, mountains, valleys, and rivers cradle hundreds of vibrant villages. From the delta lands of Mekeo to the high mountain ridges of Goilala, the villages of Central Province hold centuries of tradition, deep kinship systems, and rich ceremonial life.

Over a dozen languages and dialects (e.g., Motu, Mekeo, Nara, Koiari, Tauade).

Visitors are welcomed with genuine hospitality—offered betelnut, fresh fruits, and stories. You’ll find:

  • Guesthouses and homestays in Sogeri, Aroma, Mekeo, and Tapini.

  • Cultural performances during independence week or special village feasts.

  • Eco-tourism: Kokoda trekking, village walks, food gardens, river tubing.

Mekeo Village

Angabanga River in Mekeo, Kairiku Hiri District has flooded its banks forcing the travelling public to cross the river to get to the other side

Goilala Village

Beyond the soft blue ridgelines of Sogeri, where the paved roads end and mist clings to the highland forest, the land rises into the wild, remote mountain ranges of Goilala District. Here, scattered among steep valleys and cloud-kissed peaks, lie villages that seem suspended in time—Tapini, Woitape, Fane, Kosipe, Ononghe, and Loloipa—each with its own story carved into the cliffs and whispered by the wind.
